Job Summary

The General Physician in Emergency Care is responsible for providing immediate, high-quality medical care to patients presenting with acute conditions or medical emergencies. This role requires quick decision-making, diagnostic skills, and the ability to manage a wide range of medical situations, including life-threatening conditions. The physician works in close collaboration with emergency medical staff to ensure patients receive timely and effective treatment, while also coordinating further care or hospitalization when necessary.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Assessment and Diagnosis

    • Evaluate patients presenting with medical emergencies, including trauma, acute illnesses, and severe infections.
    • Perform physical exams, order diagnostic tests, and interpret results to establish a diagnosis quickly.
    • Provide immediate treatment for life-threatening conditions such as heart attack, stroke, or respiratory distress.
  2. Emergency Medical Treatment

    • Administer emergency interventions, including IV fluids, medications, pain management, and oxygen therapy.
    • Stabilize patients in critical condition and coordinate care for immediate transfer to specialized departments when required.
    • Manage and monitor patients’ vital signs in the emergency department.
  3. Collaboration with Medical Team

    • Work closely with nurses, paramedics, and specialists to ensure comprehensive care for emergency patients.
    • Communicate clearly with family members regarding the patient's condition and treatment plan.
  4. Procedures and Interventions

    • Perform basic and advanced life-saving procedures, including airway management, resuscitation, and wound care.
    • Handle emergency procedures such as suturing wounds, setting fractures, and draining abscesses.
  5. Documentation and Record-Keeping

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including patient history, diagnostic findings, treatment plans, and progress notes.
    • Ensure proper documentation of emergency interventions and any procedures performed.
  6. Discharge and Follow-Up Care

    • Provide post-emergency instructions to patients and their families, including medication prescriptions and lifestyle modifications.
    • Coordinate with specialists for follow-up care if necessary and ensure patients are referred to appropriate healthcare services.
  7. Patient Education and Counseling

    • Educate patients on the prevention of medical emergencies and offer guidance on managing chronic conditions to reduce the risk of future emergencies.
    • Provide psychological support and counseling to patients and families in high-stress situations.
  8. Maintaining a Safe Environment

    • Ensure adherence to infection control and safety protocols in the emergency department.
    • Oversee the proper functioning of emergency medical equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Initial Patient Assessment and Diagnosis

    • Quickly assess patients who present with emergency conditions, including trauma, chest pain, respiratory distress, and other acute symptoms.
    • Conduct thorough physical examinations, take patient histories, and order necessary diagnostic tests to formulate an accurate diagnosis.
  • Emergency Medical Intervention

    • Administer immediate treatment to stabilize patients, including medication, IV fluids, and oxygen therapy as required.
    • Manage critical cases such as cardiac arrest, strokes, and severe trauma through life-saving interventions like CPR, defibrillation, and intubation.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team

    • Work closely with emergency medical staff, including nurses, paramedics, and specialists, to provide comprehensive patient care.
    • Coordinate with other departments (e.g., cardiology, neurology) to ensure specialized treatment for patients requiring further care.
  • Performing Emergency Procedures

    • Perform emergency medical procedures such as wound suturing, fracture setting, lumbar punctures, and insertion of central lines or nasogastric tubes when necessary.
    • Supervise and assist in advanced life support procedures and protocols during medical crises.
  • Patient Monitoring and Support

    • Continuously monitor patients' vital signs, symptoms, and responses to treatment, adjusting care plans as needed.
    • Ensure effective pain management and comfort for patients undergoing emergency treatment or recovery.
  • Patient and Family Communication

    • Communicate with patients and their families regarding the diagnosis, treatment plan, and expected outcomes in a clear and compassionate manner.
    • Offer emotional support and counsel families in high-stress, emergency situations.
  • Documentation and Record Maintenance

    • Accurately document all patient interactions, assessments, treatments, and procedures performed in compliance with hospital protocols.
    • Maintain up-to-date patient charts and medical records for future reference and continuity of care.
  • Discharge Planning and Follow-up Care

    • Provide discharge instructions to patients, including prescriptions, follow-up appointments, and lifestyle recommendations for preventing future emergencies.
    • Coordinate with specialists and primary care providers for continued patient care post-discharge.
  • Infection Control and Safety Compliance

    • Adhere to strict infection control protocols to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
    • Ensure that emergency medical equipment is sterilized and maintained properly.
  • Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development

    • Stay up-to-date with the latest practices in emergency care and attend relevant training or conferences to enhance clinical skills.
